General meaning: an invisible force, power, or influence.

1. Breath of life.

Genesis 6:17 ----- I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath [ruach] of life. . . every thing that is in the earth shall die.

Genesis 7:15 ----- And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

Genesis 7:22 ----- All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 ----- Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit [ruach] shall return unto God who gave it.

2. Wind (weather, atmospheric conditions).

Genesis 3:8 ----- And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool [ruach] of the day.

Genesis 8:1 ----- God made a wind [ruach] to pass over the earth.

1 Kings 18:45 ----- the heaven was black with clouds and wind [ruach].

Psalm 1:4 ----- like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

The Wicked Shall Be Burned Up

Psalm 11:6 ----- Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone.

Psalm 21:9 ----- Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven ... the fire shall devour them.

Malachi 4:1 ----- the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven ... shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

Malachi 4:3 -----they shall be ashes under ... your feet.

Matthew 3:12 ----- He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Matthew 13:41, 42 ----- they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend ... and shall cast them into a furnace of fire.

John 15:6 ----- as a branch ... cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

Hebrews 10:27 ----- fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation.

The Grave Hell

Sheol, Old Testament, Hebrew word for the place of the dead, is translated grave 31 times, hell 31 times, and pit 3 times.

1. Both righteous and wicked go to sheol at death.

Psalm 16: 10 ----- For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell [sheol].

Psalm 89:48 ----- What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave [sheol]?

2. Job, a righteous man, wanted to be hidden in sheol until God's wrath is past.

Job 14:13 ----- 0 that thou wouldest hide me in the grave [sheol] ... until thy wrath be past.

3 .Jacob, a man who will be in God's Kingdom, said he was going down into sheol mouming for his son.

Genesis 37:35 -----1 will go down into the grave [sheol] unto my son mourning.

4. Hezekiah, shortly after God answered his prayer, said that he was going to the gates of sheol.

Isaiah 38: 10 ----- I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave [sheol]: I am deprived of the residue of my years.

5 .Sheol consumes sinners.

Job 24:19 ----- Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave [sheol] those which have sinned.

6. Death and sheol (place of the dead) are linked together.

Psalm 6:5 ----- For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave (place of the dead) who shall give thee thanks?

7. Sheol, the place of the dead, will not last forever.

Psalm 49:15 ----- But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave.

8. There will be an end of sheol.

Hosea 13:14 ----- 0 grave,[sheol] I will be thy destruction.

(Note: Sheol is the Old Testament word translated "hell." Hell in the Old Testament means the place of the dead.)

Hades, New Testament, is the Greek equivalent of sheol, and is translated grave 1 time, and hell 10 times. It has the same meaning as the place of the dead.

Matthew 11:23 ----- And thou, Capernaum ... shall be brought down to hell [hades].

Matthew 16:18 ----- I will build my church; and the gates of hell [place of the dead, the grave] shall not prevail against it.

Luke 16:23 ----- And in hell [hades] he lift up his eyes, being in torments.

Acts 2:27 ----- thou wilt not leave my soul in hell.

Acts 2:31 ----- resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell [hades].

1 Corinthians 15:55 ----- 0 grave, where is thy victory? [hades, also]

Revelation 1: 18----- have the keys of hell [grave] and of death.

Revelation 6:8 ----- his name ... was Death, and Hell [hades, grave] followed with him.

Revelation 20:13 ----- death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them; and they were judged. (Note: Their judgment after coming out of hell [the grave]. )

Revelation 20:14 ----- death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. (Note: One hell to be cast into the other. Hades to be cast into Gehenna. Hell into hellfire.)

The Lake of Fire Hell - Future

Gehenna, New Testament, Greek word for hell, hell fire, used 12 times, spoken of also as lake of fire, is to be used of God to destroy the wicked after their judgment.

Matthew 5:22 ----- shall be in danger of hell fire.

Matthew 5:29,30-----not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Matthew 10:28 ----- destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 23:15 ----- ye make him twofold more the child of hell [hell-fire] than yourselves.

Matthew 23:33 ----- how can ye escape the damnation of hell? [Gehenna, hell-fire].

Mark 9:43 ----- having two hands to go into hell.

Mark 9.45 ----- having two feet to be cast into hell.

Mark 9:47 ----- having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. (See also, Isaiah 66:24).

Luke 12:5 ----- after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell.

Acts 19:6, 8 -----Paul ... disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Acts 20:25 ----- among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God.

Acts 28:23 ----- to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus.

Acts 28:31 ----- Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Kingdom of God is Still Future

Daniel 2:44 ----- And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed ... it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

It Will Be Established on Earth

The Household of God

God's called-out ones. Made up of all the faithful of all ages.

The Name of the True Church

Since Pentecost, anyone desiring to become a member of the Household of God, must become a member of the body of Christ, the "church." The Lord adds to the true church those that qualify by faith and obedience. It is God's church, and He has put His Son Jesus Christ over it, to be Head of it.

1 Peter 3:18 ----- For Christ also hath once suffered for sins ... that he might bring us to God.

Acts 20:28 ----- feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

1 Corinthians 1:1, 2 ----- Paul ... Unto the church of God which is at Corinth.

1 Corinthians 10:32 ----- Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God.

1 Corinthians 11:16 ----- But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

1 Corinthians 11:22 ----- What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God?

1 Corinthians 15:9 ----- I persecuted the church of God.

2 Corinthians 1:1 ----- Paul ... unto the church of God which is at Corinth.

Have Faith, Believe

Mark 1:15 ----- believe the gospel.

Mark 16:15,16 ----- preach the gospel ...he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.

Acts 8:12 -----But when they believed...kingdom ... Christ they were baptized, both men and women.

Acts 10:43 ----- whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

Acts 16:30, 31 ----- what must I do to be saved? Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.

Romans 1:16 ----- gospel ... power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.

Romans 10: 17 ----- faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Hebrews 11:6 ----- But without faith it is impossible to please him [God] ... must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Repent

Mark 6:12 ----- they ... preached that men should repent.

Luke 13:3 ----- except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Luke 24:47 ----- repentance and remission of sins should be preached.

Acts 2:38 ----- Repent, and be baptized every one of you.

Acts 3:19 ----- Repent ye therefore, and be converted.

Be Baptized

Mark 16:16 ----- He that believeth [the gospel] and is baptized shall be saved.
